Sugi Japanese Cedar

Sugi

Japanese Cedar - Cryptomeria Japonica

Japanese Cedar, also known as Sugi (Cryptomeria Japonica)

Grown in the cold climate and fertile soils of Japan, Sugi is a world-class, sustainably harvested, and highly durable timber, perfect for enduring the extremes of the Australian climate.

Kosny Timber sources our Sugi from plantations in Japan, where the timber has a centuries-old history. There are many examples where Sugi has been used as exterior cladding and building frames that are 400 years old and still standing.

In Japan, the wood is traditionally charred using the Yakisugi method, enhancing its water, rot and insect resistance without the need for additional coatings or oils. It's worth noting that the term "Shou Sugi Ban" is a Western invention and not recognized in Japan.

Sugi is an economical and sustainable alternative to Western Red Cedar, it shares many of the same advantageous properties.

Kosny Timber imports heart-only Sugi in near-clear grade (115 x 50mm feed stock) or knotty grade (150 x 50mm feed stock). We supply the timber as sawn boards, raw cladding, brushed & oiled cladding or charred, brushed & oiled cladding.
